Thomas Burnakis, PharmD, Presented Cheers Award By Institute for Safe Medication Practices

Dr. Burnakis (center) holds award Thomas Burnakis, PharmD, was recently honored by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices for his work in setting a standard of excellence for others to follow in the prevention of medication errors and adverse drug events.

Burnakis, coordinator of Pharmacy Clinical Services at Baptist Medical Center, was presented with the Cheers Award for Volunteer Service for his nearly decade of service as a reviewer and contributor to the Institute's three newsletters. Burnakis' selection by the institute's panel of judges was unanimous.

"I am truly honored the ISMP and my peers and colleagues chose to recognize my contribution," Burnakis says.

Burnakis is a frequent contributor to ISMP publications, using the forums to highlight safe medication practices and medication errors.

"It's only when people come up and say 'this happened' that we know to look at a situation and see how we can prevent it from happening again. By constantly refining our process we truly make strides in patient safety," Burnakis says.

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) is a nonprofit organization that works closely with healthcare practitioners and institutions, regulatory agencies, consumers, and professional organizations to provide education about medication errors and their prevention. ISMP represents nearly 30 years of experience in helping healthcare practitioners keep patients safe, and continues to lead efforts to improve the medication use process.
