Baptist Medical Center Beaches Hosts Dual Celebration
Naming of Wilson/Epstein Center and Opening of new East Pavilion
Jacksonville, Fla., Mar. 31, 2005 - Community members are invited to attend a dual celebration at
Baptist Medical
Center Beaches: a dedication ceremony for the naming of the Wilson/Epstein Center, immediately followed by an opening
event for the hospital's new East Pavilion.
The Baptist Beaches Diagnostic and Rehabilitative Center, located on Roberts Drive on the west end of the hospital
campus, houses several outpatient services. Women's imaging occupies the south end of the center. The
sleep disorders center is located on the west side of the building. Rehabilitative services occupy several areas to provide
pediatric
therapy services, occupational and speech therapy, outpatient physical therapy, and a suite for the cardiac and pulmonary
rehabilitation programs. Diabetes education classes and CPR education courses are conducted in the conference room.
The Diagnostic and Rehabilitative Center is being named in honor of Tylee and Patricia Wilson and Barry and Lisa Epstein,
who have been generous supporters of the capital campaign. The dedication ceremony for the Wilson/Epstein Center will
be held in the women's imaging waiting area at 4:30 p.m. on April 12, 2005.
Baptist Beaches has seen a tremendous increase in the demand for health care services at the hospital. Over the last 10
years, the number of admissions to the hospital has grown by over 170%. In response to this growth, the three story East
Pavilion was built as an addition to the east side of the hospital building, and opened for occupancy at the beginning
of this year. The second floor of the East Pavilion is a 24 bed critical/progressive care unit featuring individual
patient care rooms based on a family centered universal bed concept. Each room is equipped with state of the art
monitoring systems and procedure carts, allowing patients to receive care as in a critical care unit or a progressive
care unit. This dual capability, supported by the cross-trained ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) credentialed nursing staff, minimizes the need
for patient transfers as their condition changes. Each patient room has its own bathroom and shower, and is furnished with a sofa bed and a desk for the comfort of family members. Additional features for patient comfort and convenience include telephone and television access in each room, and even remote control of the window shades. The new unit is designed to provide a holistic healing environment for the patient as well as their significant others. As such, the family area includes a lounge, a kitchenette, and resource library. The library will offer computers for internet access, as well as books and pamphlets on a wide variety of health and medical information.
The previous Baptist Beaches eight bed critical care unit will be converted to a day-stay unit which will accommodate
patients that need to be monitored, typically for 4-8 hour stays, during and/or following special procedures.
The ground floor of the East Pavilion opened in early March 2005. The redesigned outpatient entrance and lobby includes a
covered driveway for patient pick up and drop off, and expansive floor to ceiling window views. The new outpatient
registration has separate desks and cubicles that provide registering patients with increased privacy. A display of
historical photos from Jacksonville Beach lines the wall opposite the registration desks.
The hospital's inpatient pharmacy has moved to the East Pavilion and has expanded from an area with less than 1,000
square feet to a space with more than 1,800 square feet. Hospital chaplain
Don Lynn has moved into the East Pavilion
from his previous office at the Diagnostic and Rehabilitative Center. A new medical staff conference room will
accommodate most of the scheduled meetings of the physician staff and committees.
Nearly half of the East Pavilion features an expansive gastrointestinal (GI) suite, with twelve patient bays and three
endoscopy suites. Ten of the patient bays have a window view, and the entire area is bright yet warm and comfortable
in terms of décor and space. The new suite will accommodate all endoscopy procedures, which will free up space
for other outpatient surgery patients and staff in the hospital's existing surgical services area.
The celebration event scheduled for April 12 will serve to thank and recognize the groups and individuals that
have made the continued growth and development of the community's hospital possible. Chief executive officer
for Baptist Health,
Hugh Greene, chairman of the Baptist Beaches board of directors, John Anderson, along with
Baptist Beaches administrator,
Joe Mitrick
will participate in the ceremonies. The event will also offer an
opportunity to tour the Wilson/Epstein Center and the East Pavilion.
