Wolfson Rehab Opens Drew Bradbury Center in the Aetna Building
Open House Will Be Held on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at 5 p.m.
Jacksonville, FL, February 26, 2007 -- Wolfson Children's Hospital recently opened the Drew Bradbury Center, the primary site for Wolfson Rehab Services. The center, which is located on the first floor of the Aetna building across from Baptist Medical Center Downtown, is one of four outpatient clinics for Wolfson Rehab; Wolfson also offers inpatient rehabilitation services. An open house will be held at 5 p.m. on March 20.
The 8,000-square-foot center is a family-centered, full-service rehabilitation facility offering occupational, physical and speech therapies for patients with delays in fine motor skills, gross motor skills, speech and feeding, as well as children with sensory integration disorders.
Multidisciplinary programs include the Spinal Defects Clinic, which gives patients with spina bifida and spinal injuries one-stop access to pediatric subspecialists, therapists and social services staff. This spring, the Pediatric Neurosciences Clinic will open in the Drew Bradbury Center to treat children with disorders of the brain, learning disabilities, educational problems, conditions like hydrocephalus and those who have recently had brain surgery.
The design of the center incorporated suggestions from families of Wolfson Rehab patients. "What we hope to bring to this center is a family-friendly feel that is less clinical and more child-centered," says Cathi Allison, manager of Wolfson Rehab. "We don't want it to feel like a clinic, but instead like a play environment such as a park or your own home. That look and feel is incorporated in the decor of our themed therapy rooms, which feature colorful murals by local artists and unique, high-tech equipment that is fun and not scary."
Also part of the Drew Bradbury Center is the Jacksonville Jaguars-sponsored Orthopaedic Clinic. The clinic, which serves preteens and young teenagers, offers sports, physical and occupational therapies, as well as equipment designed for their conditions and their size, a separate clinic entrance and a sports decor. "We only treat kids, so we feel we can provide a level of care that's more appropriate to each child's level of maturity and needs," says Allison.
The Drew Bradbury Center was made possible by a $1 million gift from the Bradbury Family Foundation. Robin Bradbury and his wife Sharyn, along with their daughter Kyle, gave this generous bequest in honor of son Drew, who died of cystic fibrosis in 1994. Bradbury, a longtime friend and supporter of Wolfson Children's Hospital, is a trustee of Baptist Health Foundation and serves as chair of the board's Special Gifts Committee.
