Filmless Diagnostic Services – PACS

Improved service and convenience for patients follows the adaptation of electronic medical records at Baptist Center Nassau, with the Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS) in the Radiology Department.

doctors confer at computer PACS consists of a computer network to capture, store, distribute, and display images on computer screens. This allows for consultations between a doctor and patient, or between doctors who may be separated by miles. Images are stored on highly secure master and backup computers with the privacy of patient data being carefully protected.

Radiologists can use tools in PACS to enlarge, brighten and sharpen images to get a better view of suspicious areas, meaning fewer repeats of X-rays may be needed. The new technology also allows for exam times to be scheduled sooner.

All MRIs, X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound and nuclear medicine procedures performed at Baptist Nassau use the system. PACS images become part of the patient's electronic medical record, so all important data on his or her health history and condition is easily accessible to members of the care team. Patients can request a CD of their images, saving them time, hassles or costs if they move away, seek a second opinion, change doctors or travel out of town.
