About Baptist South
Growing Along with Our Community
Baptist South has constructed a new eight-story patient care tower; with four floors now open. The additional floors add 76 new patient beds, including a state-of-the-art, 14-bed Level II Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which is a partnership with the neonatal intensive care program at
Wolfson Children's Hospital.
The Level II NICU allows for more babies with varying health needs to be born at Baptist South and to receive care in partnership with Wolfson, the only regional pediatric referral facility.
The new patient tower at Baptist South includes an additional 10 new maternity suites - bringing the total to 22 - allowing labor delivery, recovery and postpartum in the same room, 48 acute care beds, and a new inpatient pharmacy and cardiology area. Four more intensive care beds are slated to open in the fall. The remainder of the building is vacant space that is available for future inpatient, outpatient and surgical services growth.
With the completion of the construction project, Baptist South will have 196 beds - more than double its size when it opened in 2005 with 92 beds.
Along with the increase in hospital space, Baptist South is working to increase the number of physicians and specialties available to the community by constructing a new five-story medical office building on its campus that is due to open in October 2009. To make it more convenient for patients and visitors to access the buildings, there is now more surface level parking, thanks to a new parking garage that was built for physicians and staff.
Jacksonville's First Hospital of the 21st Century
Baptist Health expanded its circle of care in 2005 by adding Baptist Medical Center South to serve the rapidly growing neighborhoods in southern Duval and northern St. Johns counties. Jacksonville's first hospital of the 21st century and a Magnet hospital -- the highest honor a health care organization can receive for excellence in patient care --offers residents convenient access to this full-service healthcare facility at Interstate 95 and Old St. Augustine Road.
The hospital blends an advanced electronic environment with Baptist Health's holistic mission of providing for the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of patients and their families. Like all Baptist Health facilities, Baptist Medical Center South is a faith-based, mission-driven, locally governed organization dedicated to providing high-quality care for everyone.

A Healing Environment
A vision of a special environment for healing inspired the design of Baptist Medical Center South. From its landscaping and architecture to patient- and family-friendly amenities, the facility offers an atmosphere not available at other local adult hospitals. These amenities include:
- large, private patient rooms with a resort-like feel
- bedside admission for observation patients and inpatients
- bedside data ports for Internet access
- day beds and refrigerators in all rooms
- bedside controls for blinds, lights, TV, Internet and nurse call, allowing patients to regulate their physical environment
- three gardens and two fountains
- reflection areas
- a Library for Healing
- washers and dryers for visitor use
- movies on demand
- Original artwork of varying mediums is displayed throughout the campus, primarily created by the local art community.
A Paperless and Filmless Environment
Baptist South opened its doors with an all electronic medical record (EMR), a system which provides safer, more efficient ways for clinicians and physicians to provide health care. The EMR tracks patient's health histories and hospital stays and allow physicians to retrieve medical information at the bedside. Everything related to a patient's care including lab reports, physician notes and orders, test results, medications, dosages and more are instantly available to caregivers, helping to maintain the highest quality care possible.
The electronic environment is further supplemented by the Picture Archive Communications System (PACS). This computer network is used to capture, store, distribute and display medical images electronically. It offers significant advantages including the ability to read images sooner because there is no film to develop, PACS images are instantly available online whenever and wherever needed, 24 hours a day, and images can be enhanced digitally which means that fewer repeat images may be needed and appointment times decrease.
