Professional Scholarship Program
The Professional Scholarship program for the hospitals of Baptist Health originated in the late 1980s, in response to a nursing shortage. A group of interested physicians and Baptist Health Foundation developed a golf tournament, supported by "host" physicians, community leaders and sponsors, to raise money for scholarships to help fill staffing needs. The Mercedes-Benz Scholarship Golf Classic was born and has raised over $1 million since its inception 17 years ago.
Baptist Health Foundation's Scholarship Program provides financial support to benefits-eligible Baptist Health System employees and others to encourage entry into health care fields that are experiencing a shortage of applicants and to promote the attainment of educational degrees by care-giving employees. Because the golf tournament is financially successful, a portion of the proceeds has been placed in an endowment to assure future funding availability. For more information about the professional scholarship program, please call the Foundation at 904.202.2919.
Candidates for a professional scholarship must be accepted in an accredited educational program in the following fields: Nursing, LPN bridging to RN, BSN, MSN and/or other health professions where staffing shortages occur. A scholarship is awarded for one year, with an opportunity for renewal if a minimum grade point average of 3.0 is maintained. A complete explanation of the applicant's commitment is available in the agreement each recipient signs. The Foundation's Scholarship Committee interviews applicants three times during the year. Applications deadlines are January 15, May 30 and September 30 of each year. There will be no discrimination based upon race, sex, color, national origin, age, disability, religions and/or marital status.
