Head and Neck (ENT - Ear, Nose, and Throat)
Otolaryngology
Disorders of the ears, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck fall within the domain of Otolaryngology (pronounced oh-toe-lair-in-gol-o-gee). Head and Neck Surgery, a subspecialty of Otolaryngology, deals with the diagnosis and treatment of tumors in these areas.
Problems addressed by the Otolaryngologist - head and neck surgeons include:
- cancers of the lips, mouth, throat, and larynx
- face, ear, and neck skin cancers, including melanoma
- salivary gland tumors
- thyroid and parathyroid gland tumors
- reconstruction of facial defects following cancer excision
Special techniques used in the management of head and neck area tumors include sentinel node biopsy and three-dimensional
image guided
surgery for sinus or nasal tumors. Head and Neck Surgeons also work commonly with Radiation Oncologists and Medical Oncologists to provide complete care for individuals with head and neck area tumors.
