Gamma Knife
History: Elekta
Elekta was founded in 1972 by the late Lars Leksell, Professor of Neurosurgery at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. During the 1970's, Elekta successfully developed and licensed medical equipment and technologies, which were based on Professor Leksell's achievements during three decades of research and development.
The Leksell Gamma Knife® along with its dose planning system, is a unique device used to non-invasively treat brain tumors and vascular malformations in the brain.
The first Gamma Knife prototype was installed at the Karolinska Hospital in 1968, but the Leksell Gamma Knife did not become available internationally until 1987.
With the acquisition of Philips Radiation Therapy, Elekta was renamed Elekta Oncology Systems and remains headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.
