Gastroenterology is the specialty of Internal Medicine that deals with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastroenterologists spent three years after medical school in specialized training in Internal Medicine and then another three years in training in the diseases of the Gastrointestinal system (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, esophagus, small bowel , colon and the rectum).
Gastroenterologic conditions can profoundly affect both the health and overall quality of life. Our physicians are committed to improved treatments for digestive tract and related disorders through the use of state-of-the-art techniques. These techniques are used in the direct treatment of gastroenterologic oncology and in support of treatment of other types of cancer.

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy - Liver Cancer Treatment
Interventional radiologists and radiation oncologists at Baptist Medical Center Downtown offer a regional radiation treatment for liver cancer called Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT). Use of SIRT is indicated for cancer patients who have tumors involving the liver and who are not candidates for surgery. The most common patients referred for the procedure have had colorectal cancer or hepatocellular cancer (a rare consequence of chronic hepatitis infection).
