Baptist Health is participating in the largest prostate cancer prevention trial, SELECT, launched by the National Cancer Institute and the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG). The study closed enrollment in June 2004 after enrolling 35,534 participants. The participants of the trial will be followed by the study until the year 2013.

The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) trial will determine if these two dietary supplements can protect against prostate cancer, the most common form of cancer (after skin cancer) in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that during 2004, prostate cancer will be diagnosed in about 230,110 Americans and more than 29,900 men are expected to die of the disease.

Some of the risk factors for the disease include the following:

  • being over age 55
  • being African-American
  • having a father or brother with prostate cancer

The American Cancer Society guidelines for screening are:
  • Annual PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test and DRE (Digital Rectal Examination) for men age 50 and older.
  • Annual PSA and DRE for African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer between the ages of 40-45.
