The renovated Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Wolfson Children's Hospital opened in Spring of 2004 to care for our smallest patients. The $6 million project involves the complete renovation of the rooms that contain the 48 Newborn Intensive Care Unit beds and the creation of an expanded parent area, new support area and a private room for mothers.

"These new spaces will give our families some much-needed privacy and all of those involved additional room to care for some of our smallest patients," said Carolyn Johnson, Vice President of Patient Care Services at Wolfson Children's Hospital.

The project was funded in part with a $3 million gift from the Women's Board of Wolfson Children's Hospital. The renovation and expansion has effectively doubled the size of the NICU.

"This is a phenomenal environment for our babies, their families and our staff," says Natalie Taylor, RN, Nurse Manager of the NICU. "The renovations bring more warmth and intimacy to the NICU."

The NICU combines advanced technology and trained healthcare professionals to provide specialized care for the tiniest patients. Approximately 9% of all babies born receive some care in a Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
