Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides an unparalleled view inside the human body. MRI is the method of choice for the diagnosis of many types of injuries and conditions because of its incredible ability to tailor the exam to the particular medical question being asked.
Baptist Health offers two highly effective methods of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
- Our high-field MRI systems are designed with short horizontal tubes (about half the length of the traditional scanner) which minimizes claustrophobic effect. Our scanners maximize image resolution and speed.
- Our Open MRI scanner offers the latest software options to ensure the highest quality images from a low field magnet while enhancing patient comfort.
All MRIs require a physician's referral and can be scheduled at any of our locations (Downtown Jacksonville, Beaches, Nassau, South, Primary Care Regency, or Primary Care Lane Avenue).
How MRI Works
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a a painless, non-surgical procedure with no known side effects. MRI technology works by using a magnetic field, radio frequency waves and a computer. When a patient is placed inside the special magnetic field, water molecules (hydrogen atoms) in the body naturally align themselves. The MRI unit then uses radio waves to pass through the body which cause the water molecules to move. The computer generates these signals into images onto film giving a complete picture of the inside of the patient's body.
Open MRI
An "open" MRI is a patient-friendly system that virtually eliminates patient anxiety and claustrophobia, without compromising diagnostic results. Some of the features are:
- Open design for increased patient visibility
- Spacious patient opening
- Open design head coil with mirror
- Exceptionally quiet
- Ample airflow and lighting
- Extra-wide table
- Hand-held call button
- Family member can sit near patient
- Quick production of two-dimensional high quality images and three-dimensional models

You can schedule an Open MRI at either the Outpatient Center in Jacksonville (1235 San Marco Blvd.) or at Baptist Medical Center - Beaches (1350 13th Avenue South - Jacksonville Beach).
Patient Preparation for an MRI
No special preparation is necessary prior to the MR exam. However, because of the magnetic field, all those who enter the exam room should remove coins, jewelry, and metal objects such as watches, glasses, hearing aids, credit cards, keys, hair pins, and dental pieces.
