A PET/CT scanner is a single scanner which incorporates both PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography)
technology into a single unit. By combining the functional (metabolic) imaging capabilities of a PET with the anatomical
detail of a CT, this new scanner offers improved detail regarding size, location, and shape of a tumor.

In preparation for the PET/CT, a small amount
of "tracer" material such as glucose (sugar) is injected into your bloodstream. As the body uses or "metabolizes" the tracer substance, the
PET/CT scan records images of how the cells are functioning. The completed scan is analyzed by a certified radiologist and the results are reported to your physician.
Previously only used in research, the PET/CT is now available for diagnostic use. Approximately 900,000 PET/CT scans were performed in 2004.
Once your physician has referred you for an imaging procedure, call 904.202.2222 to make your appointment at our San Marco location (Interstate 95 Exit 350 in Jacksonville) or our Baptist Beaches location (Jacksonville Beach).
